Clayton Lester

Clayton T Lester has been a member of the Danville Life Saving and First Aid Crew since 1962. He has lived the life of a crewmember daily since joining the ranks of the Danville crew. Through his efforts he has made it possible for the Danville Life Saving Crew to have the best training and equipment available to serve the citizens of Danville.

Clayton was born February 20, 1935 in Pittsylvania County and graduated from Spring Garden School in 1954. He then attended Danville technical Institute and continued his schooling there until 1955.

In 1976 he graduated from Danville Community College with an A.A.S. degree in Banking and Financial Management. After serving his country in the United States Army, he returned to Danville and shortly thereafter joined the Danville Life Saving Crew.

Clayton is a life member of the Danville Life Saving Crew and has held many crew offices. He has served as Secretary, First Lieutenant, Captain from 1976-78, Assistant Business Manager for ten years and served as Business Manager for nineteen years since 1982. Clayton has served on the Board of Directors for twenty-five years and served as board treasurer for a great number of those years as well since 1982. In 1988 he was named as Crew of the Year. Besides the many hours he has devoted to his local squad, Clayton has served the Virginia Association of Volunteer Rescue Squads in many capacities. From 1975-77 he was Treasurer, 1977-78 he served as Vice President and from 1978-79 he served as President. On September 25, 1982, Clayton was honored with the title of Life Member of the V.A.V.R.S. In addition to being active on the state level, he has been a familiar face at many V.A.V.R.S. District V functions and is also a member of the Hall of Fame.

In 1977, when the Danville Life Saving Crew was in the process of training the first Cardiac Technicians and preparing to make the move into Advanced Life Support Care, Clayton was instrumental in getting the public support needed to fund the endeavor. The Danville crew not only purchased advance life support equipment for the ambulances, but also provided the telemetry console to be installed at the hospital to complete the system.

In addition to the many hours of service devoted to the Danville Life Saving Crew, Clayton found the time to be an active member of Woodlawn Baptist Church for the past fifty years. He has served as a deacon of the church and also as Chairman of the Board of Deacons. He has also worked with the Danville Chapter of American Red Cross and the Danville Cancer Association. Clayton has served his crew well for over forty-nine years and has demonstrated the ability to do it all. He has served as a primary care provider to treat the sick and injured. He has served as an officer to help make decisions that affect the Danville crew. He has helped guide the state association and continues to watch the purse strings as we look forward to a new century of changes in the field of Emergency Medical Services.

Clayton is presently serving as a Sergeant in Recruitment and Retention and is our liaison between the Crew and V.A.V.R.S.
