Special Ops Response Unit

This vehicle is a 2009 International / Emergency Vehicles Incorporated rescue unit with a call sign designated as Rescue-33. This not only has the dive equipment, it carries equipment necessary for providing a mobile command post, rehabilitation unit for personnel, additional lighting for night time operations, and providing support and specialized equipment for incidents located off road.

The Dive / Swift Water Rescue Team also responds with several more pieces of equipment.  We have two double boat trailers with one of them carrying a flat bottom aluminum Rescue One boat and four sit on top kayaks.  The Rescue One boat (Boat #1) is designed to operate in normal or low water conditions due to its flat bottom and jet engine.   The kayaks are used as a means of rapid deployment to search hard to access areas such as small river channels and pond based searches where boats are not accessible.

Our second double boat trailer has been labeled as our pond operations trailer.  It carries a small 12 foot john boat (Boat #4) with a trolling motor and a small inflatable boat (Boat #5) with a 9.9 horse power engine.  It has been labeled as the pond operations trailer because all of the equipment carried on this trailer can be carried in by hand or transported in the bed of our pick-up truck fairly easily.

We also have a large 18 foot flat bottom aluminum boat that is used in conjunction with our other flat bottom Rescue One boat as it is of the same design with the only difference being a much larger engine.  The larger engine allows this boat to operate in swifter water and carry more personnel.

This boat (Boat #2) is also equipped with a depth finder and side scan sonar.  The depth finder is a very important piece of equipment because it allows us to scout a body of water that we intend to dive and determine the depth of the water.  This allows us to accurately set our search patterns to the proper depth, thus cutting down on unnecessary time resetting patterns to accommodate different depths.  The side scan sonar allows us to see a picture of what is on the bottom.  Say for example, it is an area the divers do not feel comfortable to dive because of debris in the water or extreme temperatures.  By using the side scan sonar we can move very slowly over this area and virtually scan the bottom with the sonar showing us a picture on the screen of any objects that might be lying on the bottom.  With a little practice and a good bottom, one can pick out an object as small as a handgun lying on the bottom of a body of water.

The final boat in the Dive / Swift Water Rescue Teams tool box is a 17.5 foot Zodiac inflatable boat (Boat #3).  This boat is specifically designed for swift water operations as it is made out of rubber, inflatable, has a center console, and is equipped with a 60 horse power pump jet engine.  The pump jet engine is unique in the fact it is not hindered by trash and debris in the water.  The jet turbines allow the engine to “chew” its way through the debris field in order to continue on its mission.  Since this is a much larger boat, we can carry more equipment and personnel to locations only accessible by water.
